Desk Tank

Desk Tank is made by a tiny team (right now just Toby), and we want this page to be short enough that you'll actually read it.

The short version

We don't collect anything that identifies you unless you give it to us, like an email. What we do collect is there to make Desk Tank better for you: it shows you the right download, tells us which bugs to fix and what to build next, and keeps your tank the way you left it.

What the desktop app sends

The Mac and Windows apps check in with our server now and then. Each check-in carries:

  • A random id for your shrimp, made on your computer and not tied to you.
  • How your shrimp is doing, and how you use the app, like what it has eaten and how far it has walked.
  • Your settings, app version, and your Dock's size and position, so we know the shrimp fits on screens like yours.

The app doesn't read your files, your screen or your other apps.

What the website records

When you visit desktank.app, we count the visit: your device, browser and country, how you found us, and how you used the page. We also keep a scrambled form of your IP address to stop spam, never the address itself. A random id in your browser tells one visit from the next, and it isn't linked to your tank or your email.

Your web tank

If you keep a tank at desktank.app/tank, we store your shrimp, your plants, any notes you write when you send a shrimp to someone, and a login cookie so the tank stays yours.

If you save your tank with your email, we keep that email to send you a sign-in code. That's the only reason we'll ever email you about your tank.

Who helps us run it

We don't share your data, but a few services store or carry it on our behalf: Supabase runs our database, Vercel hosts the website and counts visits, and Resend sends the sign-in code emails. None of them may use your data for anything of their own.

Keeping and deleting it

We keep your data for as long as Desk Tank is running, or until you ask us to delete it. Email hello@desktank.app and we'll delete whatever we hold for you: your web tank, your email, your app's shrimp or your site visits. Tell us roughly when you visited or what your shrimp is called, so we can find it.

Kids

Desk Tank isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their email.

Changes

If anything here changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Questions? hello@desktank.app
